There are several electric vehicle battery types on the Indian Trail market, each designed for different functions in a wide variety of models. The EV battery technology in your vehicle will depend on whether you own an EV, a hybrid, or a plug-in hybrid. Explore the different types of EV batteries below:

Nickel-Metal Hydride Batteries

Nickel-metal hydride batteries, or NiMH batteries, are a popular type of electric vehicle battery for hybrid vehicles. NiMH batteries tend to have a high self-discharge rate but a long life cycle, making them perfect for self-charging hybrid models. Some of the key features of nickel-metal hydride batteries include:

  • High-cost
  • Generate significant heat
  • High self-discharge rate
  • Longer life cycle than lead-acid or lithium-ion batteries

Ultracapacitor Batteries 

Unlike NiMH batteries, ultracapacitor batteries are often used as secondary storage on plug-in hybrid or electric vehicles. This EV battery technology helps level the electric load of the main battery while offering additional power during acceleration or through the regenerative braking system. It’s rare to see ultracapacitor batteries used as the primary power source for any electrified vehicle. 

Lead-Acid Batteries 

Like ultracapacitor batteries, lead-acid batteries are typically used in electrified models as secondary storage due to their poor performance in cold temperatures and short life cycles. That said, their low cost, reliability, and general safety make them efficient secondary batteries, and research is being conducted on whether more high-powered lead-acid batteries might work as primary power sources in the future. 

Lithium-Ion Batteries

The most common type of electric vehicle battery is the lithium-ion battery. Known for their high power-to-weight ratio, energy efficiency, weather resistance, and low self-discharge rate, lithium-ion batteries make for vital components in most electric vehicles.
