How to Reset a Check Engine Light

It happens to every car at some point. Eventually the check engine light is going to come on. Should you try to reset it yourself? Some Matthews drivers choose to ignore it. Is that wise? It Could Just Be Your Fuel Cap

It sounds strange, but a loose fuel cap can cause the check engine light to come on. This isn’t always the reason, but check just in case so you can save yourself the trouble of trying to reset the check engine light, if this does happen to be the issue. Remove the fuel cap and put it right back on, ensuring it isn’t loose or improperly seated. Restart your car to see if the engine light is still on — you may have to drive a few miles before it turns off. 

Why You Shouldn’t Reset the Check Engine Light Yourself

The cause of the check engine light isn’t always something as innocuous as a gas cap. There could be a serious problem causing the light to flash. How to Reset the Check Engine Light

Again, we don’t recommend that you reset the check engine light unless you’re sure the underlying issue has been repaired. But if you are determined to do this yourself, follow these steps:

• Put on safety glasses and gloves, then turn off the ignition.
• Find the negative terminal on the battery. On most batteries, you will see a black cap and a negative (–) symbol. The positive terminal usually has a red cap and a positive (+) symbol.
• Use a wrench to loosen the nut on the negative terminal. Take the negative connector off of the battery. Set it to the side for 30 seconds to one minute.
• Reconnect the negative cable and use the wrench to tighten it again.
• If the check engine light will not go off, the issue is not fixed and you should have a professional check it out.
